HOLLYWOOD (July 26) The new nonfiction comedy film High There was a surprise high point for thousands of young fans at the sixth annual VidCon, the social media and online video conference and celebration at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The three-day gathering of fans, stars, creators, industry professionals and media wrapped up yesterday at the venue a stone's throw from Disneyland. Vidcon featured more than 300 YouTube creators and stars, corporate carpetbaggers including ABC, NBC and Nickelodeon, tens of thousands of fans -- and a celebration of High There by stars and fans alike!

The High There team, led by executive producer and public relations guru Sam Peters, was a familiar sight amid the displays, parties, lectures and appearances on Friday and Saturday, working the crowd inside and outside the convention center.

Highlights of the promotion included a "Find Dave High" contest, "High There-holding" Instagram photos and a DVD giveaway.

YouTube stars, including Bradlee Wannemacher, Johnni Riddlin, Dylan Leonte and Ghetto Vader, posed with the distinctive BRINKvision DVD, reposting their Instagram and Twitter photos to fans across the country and around the world.

The stars of High There, Dave High and Roland Jointz, might seem a generation or two removed from the likes of Tyler Oakley and Jenna Marbles, but filmmakers Wayne Darwen and Henry Goren have a special affinity for the social media crowd.  High There began as a YouTube phenomenon, first attracting attention in its earliest editing stages, when a trailer was posted and attracted more than a million views.

High There has attracted more attention, views and sales thanks to relentless advertising on social media sites including Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook.

High There is a Sam Peters International Productions Unlimited and Good Story Productions presentation of a Rat Lung picture. It was released by BRINKvision on VOD and limited edition DVD on June 23rd. It has received many positive reviews from critics, including a rave from the movie website A Bucket of Corn, which called High There "a perfect film."

Press Release: HIGH THERE turns out to be year's best-reviewed nonfiction film

For immediate release:

One reviewer calls High There "a perfect film, a perfect documentary"

HOLLYWOOD (JULY 13) -- Less than twenty days after its release, the gonzo comedy High There is the year's best-reviewed nonfiction film.

After High There opened with strong DVD and VOD sales amid a flurry of raves and a much-watched RT America television appearance by director-star Wayne Darwen, Jay Ruttenberg of the highly-regarded comedy journal Lowbrow Reader recommended immediate viewing of the film, praising its "wild... Pynchon-noirish plot."

This was followed by a "review heard 'round the world" from the essential B-movie and film fan website, A Bucket of Corn.  "The Home of Down-to-Earth Honest Reviews" stated that  High There "is a prime example of a perfect documentary... a perfect film."

In contrast, High There's most-publicized VOD competitor, The Wolfpack, was praised by the New York Times for telling "a strange tale with heart and generosity," but hit by Variety for its "middling execution."

"Perfect? I'm amazed but not surprised," said High There executive producer Sam Peters. "High There really is the best-reviewed documentary of the year!"

The A Bucket of Corn reviewer wrote: "I was thoroughly entertained. I laughed and was very much educated... This is an experience to watch. BRINKvision has done it again and brought out a very unique film... a perfect example of the art form of filmmaking through a real person, situations, and the exploration of the human species in all its weird HIGH form.

"I can’t speak highly enough about this oddball non-fiction comedy. A true eye opening trip, pardon the pun... This is possibly one of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time. It’s truly original and a perfect example of everything to do in a memorable, wild, over the top and perfect piece of filmed cinema. The reality-based ordeal, the characters, the travelog-like atmosphere, and the wild comical truths leave a truly lasting impression.

"I feel this is a perfect film. There is no flaw with this documentary. I was thoroughly entertained and it gave me a wild ride, simply put, HIGHly recommend."

A Bucket of Corn reviews "every type of film, from movies of today all the way to unknown and forgotten by time cinema."

Other sites and reviewers heaping praise on High There include The LA Weekly ("a trip, full of comedy and chaos"), film critic Indra Arriaga in the Anchorage Press ("absurdly funny" with "newsworthy substance'') and media columnist Mark Day in the national newspaper, The Australian ("a labour of love... hailed as a minor masterpiece (that) reignites a film genre made popular decades ago by the likes of Cheech and Chong... and its producer/star... described as the new Hunter S. Thompson — the new king of gonzo journalism."

The award-winning High There is also receiving five-star reviews on Amazon.com, where its initial order of limited edition DVDs has sold out (and since been replenished) and the film is a big attraction as streaming Video On Demand.

A Bucket of Corn: "A prime example of a perfect documentary!"

High There (2014)
Company: Brink Vision

Plot: Product Description: Hunter S. Thompson meets Barry McKenzie in this dark nonfiction comedy about a real-life, legendary but down-and-out tabloid television journalist who heads to Hawaii to film a marijuana travel series, only to become lost in a fog of drugs, sex and paranoia as he uncovers a secret government war to control the marijuana trade. The film touches on the controversial federal prosecution of marijuana advocate Roger Christie and his THC Ministry.

My Review and Thoughts:

This is a very interesting and hysterical documentary on the reality of WEED. No, not the things growing out of your flower bed; that is unless you live in Colorado. I think this is a prime example of a perfect Documentary. I was thoroughly entertained. I laughed and was very much educated. I ain’t going to lie, I have smoked a Joint and ate one hell of a Yummy Brownie before. Weed ain’t my thing, but for those who love it, smoke it, or use it as a medical means, I am all for it. It’s a natural plant. If the government was smart, they would legalize it, tax the crap out of it, and sell it like Cigarettes. Our economy would flourish, plain and simple.

This is an experience to watch. Brink Vision has done it again and brought out a very unique film like they tend to do. I really did not know what to expect going into this but was very satisfied in the end. I think it’s a perfect example of the art form of film making through a real person, situations, and the exploration of the human species in all its weird HIGH form.

I can’t speak highly enough about this odd ball non-fiction comedy. A true eye opening trip, pardon the pun, documentary. Mix in all the weird reality of the government, the marijuana advocate Roger Christie, and his THC Ministry, and you have one wild ride of drugs, sex and yes as you would guess, massive paranoia. Now there are two directors both well educated in the form of cinema. Wayne Darwen and Henry Goren. Wayne is a long time journalist and producer, and Henry is a video-grapher. Now something very interesting and wild for all you movie lovers and Oliver Stone freaks, is that Wayne was the inspiration for the character Wayne Gale in Oliver Stone’s masterpiece Natural Born Killers. Now both directors appear in the film under different names, Wayne is Dave High and Henry is Roland Jointz.

This is possibly one of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time. It’s truly original and a perfect example of everything to do in a memorable, wild, over the top and perfect piece of filmed cinema. The reality based ordeal, the characters, the travel log like atmosphere, and the wild comical truths leave a truly lasting impression.

I feel this is a perfect film. There is no flaw with this documentary. I was thoroughly entertained and it gave me a wild ride, simply put, HIGHly recommend.

High There director & star Wayne Darwen,
interviewed by Tyrel Ventura & Tabetha Wallace

HIGH THERE on TV: Wayne Darwen (aka Dave High) is featured guest on RT America's Watching The Hawks

Dave High, television star.  Wayne Darwen, social commentator and media critic.  High There, promoted in possibly 85 million homes across the United States this evening -- because that's the reach of RT America television, where Wayne Darwen was the featured guest on Watching The Hawks, the nightly news program that uses conversation and debate to examine the  news stories that the rest of the mainstream media shies away from.

While Darwen spoke from the RT America studio on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, hosts Tyrel Ventura and Tabetha Wallace in Washington D.D. hit him on many of the major news issues that High There brings up amid its rollicking comedy and adventure, including marijuana legalization and unfair selective prosecution, and journalism issues Darwen is quite well versed in, from the NBC scandal involving newsreader Brian Williams, the influence of pharmaceutical advertising on news coverage -- and his old boss Rupert Murdoch.

High There was released June 23rd.  It's available on VOD and limited edition BRINKvision DVD.

The Lowbrow Reader: "HIGH THERE, a wild nonfiction comedy! A Pynchon-noirish plot!"

High There

What is that mist clouding television sets and computer monitors nationwide? We’re not quite sure, but we suspect it has something to do with the recent DVD release of High There, a wild nonfiction film comedy produced by Lowbrow friend Burt Kearns. The movie was directed by its costars Henry Goren and Wayne Darwen—the latter a tabloid TV forefather who was an inspiration for Robert Downey Jr.’s Natural Born Killers character. A few years ago, the pair traveled to Hawaii intending to shoot a television travel show about smoking marijuana in America’s coolest state. They soon ended up entangled in a Pynchon-noirish plot involving the government, the drug trade, and the jailing of a local marijuana advocate. Darwen and Goren went deep into the story, even adopting the greenish alter egos Dave High and Roland Jointz. Check out High There on your movie-viewing device of choice today—and dig the groovy preview, below.
